VHSL Class 3 State Swimming Events Postponed
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Due to impending weather forecasts for areas throughout the Commonwealth, the Class 3 swimming events, originally scheduled for Sunday, February 14 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center have been postponed. The decision to postpone the event was made with the safety of VHSL competitors, coaches, officials, and meet management team in mind.
“Each of our postponements this week required a tremendous amount of coordination between League staff and the venue directors to find dates based on the availability of those facilities ,” said VHSL Assistant Director, Shawn Knight. “ We appreciate our venues willingness and flexibility to work with us to host our championships.”
The swimming events for all classifications are rescheduled as follows:
- Class 2 – February 18, 2021 at Christiansburg Aquatic Center
- Class 3 – February 25, 2021 at Christiansburg Aquatic Center
- Class 4 – February 23, 2021 at Christiansburg Aquatic Center
- Class 5 – February 18, 2021 at Jeff Rouse Swim and Sports Center
- Class 6 – February 19, 2021 at Jeff Rouse Swim and Sports Center
In seasons past we have offered District team shirts, Regional team shirts & State team shirts. In talking with our Captains & Seniors we decided on a Team shirt to celebrate our season.
In order to have practice & meets our athletes had to make choices, limit holiday gatherings, skip the sleepover, they couldn't see extended family or travel. This season showed us what it means to be a part of a team.
Thank you to all of our athletes and families, we successfully made it through the season.
The Team shirt was designed by our captains and seniors. Link below.
Available until midnight Sunday Feb 21st.

Another fun, fast meet last night, 17 Personal Bests, 5 First Place Finishes, another TEAM RECORD and an overall impressive meet.
Our ladies dive team started everything off with a 1, 2 finish. Amanda came in 1st with another team record (250.15), Kenzie finished 2nd with a PB (194.75), then newcomer and senior Maddie Stalfort rounded it out with her 6th place finish and our 3rd PB of the evening (117.40).
Our men’s dive team had a solid evening, Dane in 3rd, Jonathan in 4th and Luke coming in 6th. Great work by our dive team and Coach Andy Pratt.
Equally impressive on the swim side,1st place finishes by Tyler Whitacre, our women’s A Medley Relay, senior Sarah Sanfield in 100 fly and Parker Brooks in 100 back. We had athlete’s fighting through injury, soreness and battling back from surgeries. We had swimmers stepping up and filling in at the last minute, swimming events they’d never tried or hadn’t swam in years. Shout out to Coach Maggie and the hard work she’s been putting in with our distance swimmers, Jessie Molloy breaking 1:20 in the 100 Breast, Caitlin Kelliher, Jake Myers, Tommy Vu and Megan Montgomery.
Last night was supposed to be Senior night, it’s only been postponed and we will celebrate but this is a special group. Some of these seniors I’ve coached since 7th grade and to those of you that I’ve only known a year or two I’m proud of all of you. It’s been an honor working with you and you will be missed!
Our Toolbox Award Winners were Valerie Tonnu and Justin Ko.
NEW Health Dept Policy starting yesterday. Any athlete testing positive for COVID-19 quarantines the entire team for a 14 day period.
Final dual meet of the season will be next Friday at Oak Marr. Divers will need to provide their own transportation due to numbers restrictions and timelines. Swimmers will be taking 2 buses from Westfield, 25 athletes per bus. Additional info to follow but make sure you have your ‘Field Trip’ form filled out and turned into school by Tuesday.
Fairfax County Park Authority will not allow parents on deck to celebrate Senior Night. Centreville held their Senior night without parents. I want to include our parents and hope to include siblings so we are postponing Senior Night. We will hold it at school in the gym or the theatre. Once I have a day and time I’ll get that out to everyone.

Bulldogs Athletes and Families-
Welcome back to sports! Our goal at Westfield and FCPS is to continue providing athletic opportunities for our students in the safest possible manner. To that end, we ask for your help in a couple of critically important areas.
Please, do not send your child to practice or workouts if:
- He/she complains of not feeling well and/or has any of the following:
- Feeling feverish and/or having chills (if documented temperature/fever of 100.4F or greater)
- A new cough not due to another health condition
- Fatigue (more tired than usual)
- Nasal congestion or runny nose
- A new sore throat not due to another health condition
- New chills not due to another health condition
- New muscle pain not due to another health condition or that may have been caused by a specific activity such as physical exercise
- New loss of taste or smell, new onset of poor appetite or poor feeding Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- He/she has been exposed to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 or displays signs or symptoms associated with COVID-19
- He/she has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting results OR another family residing in the same house has been tested and is awaiting results
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) recently recommended the following: “During times of substantial COVID-19 activity VDH strongly advises athletes to wear masks at all times during group training, competition, and on the sidelines.”
Beginning Friday, December 11, students participating in FCPS athletic programs, to include in-season practices and competitions as well as out-of-season workouts, are required to wear masks during all aspects of athletic participation in all sports with the exception of wrestling, gymnastics and swim and dive.
With everyone’s help, we look forward to a successful season!
Terri K Towle
Director of Student Activities
Please see the spreadsheet with tryout assignments in the Team Files section. Divers are not included in this schedule because we do not have the same restrictions with our Dive team that we have with the Swim team. Dive tryouts are Monday Dec 14th, Tuesday Dec 15th & Thursday Dec 17th.
All tryouts are from 4:30-5:30 at Cub Run. Anyone that does not have their physical, concussion education and emergency care card turned in prior to their scheduled tryout date will not be allowed to participate.
Outdoor conditioning for this week is canceled. We have NOT been paused, we DO NOT have any issues. I want to give us the best opportunity to continue moving forward so we have canceled outdoor conditioning for this week.
Below you will find the screening link and procedure moving forward. This screening survey MUST be filled out before every practice. I WILL NOT be sending prior to practice so keep this link. Plan on arriving at Cub Run at 4:15 so we can check everyone in.
I have a Regional coaches meeting this afternoon (12/8) so I will most likely will be following up with additional information. Let me know if you have any questions.
Tryouts and practice will be much different this season. I will be providing a tryout/practice schedule for each day. That schedule will be sent out next week. If you are not planning on coming out for the team please let me know asap.
Tryouts are typically the first 3 days of practice but because we are limited with our practice space and athletes allowed in the water, tryouts will be December 14th - December 21st, 4:30-5:30 pm. With the uncertainty surrounding our season I've decided to dedicate our first tryout/practice, December 14th to our seniors. All seniors are expected at practice December 14th.
Tryouts are also included in the "Schedule" section.
If you are a senior who will be playing a sport in college:
Did you play high school sports for Westfield? Are you going off to play in college? If so, we would like to take the opportunity to honor your accomplishment. We are going to have a College Commitment Signing Photo Opportunity, Wednesday December 16th. Athletes will be assigned a 10 minute time slot to come into Westfield and get their picture taken. We are going to hold the photo opportunity on the theatre stage. The student athlete and family members only (not to exceed 10 total family members) will enter through Door 14 to get their picture taken. We will have a Westfield backdrop and table set up. All participants and family members will be required to wear masks and answer COVID protocol questions. This opportunity is for those student athletes that have committed and/or signed early. We will continue to plan our annual College Commitment Ceremony in May for those not committing at this time. Please sign up for a time HERE. Please sign up by Monday December 14th.
